Academic Dishonesty (Defined by InfoSkills)
The University of Newcastle defines academic dishonesty as comprising two major categories, academic fraud and plagiarism.
Academic Fraud (Defined by InfoSkills)
Academic fraud is making a false representation to gain an unjust advantage. Academic fraud includes: falsification of data reusing your own work that has been submitted previously and counted towards another course (this is known as self-plagiarism) illegal pre-examination access to examination papers or questions illegal post-examination alteration of marks or grades copying from another student or allowing a student to copy from you copying from notes smuggled into the examination room using a device to communicate with others in or outside the examination room improperly using an allowable device to access information representing another student in an examination allowing yourself to be represented by another student in an examination.
Academic Integrity (Defined by InfoSkills)
Academic integrity governs the way in which you research and write while at University. It is founded on the principles of respect for knowledge, truth, scholarship and acting with honesty. These principles and values are the foundation of academia.
Academic Plan (Defined by NUSTAR)
While students enrol in a program, they must also declare a plan, eg 10039P Bachelor of Business. Each Academic Program must have at least one defined Plan. A Plan may be used to define each of the specialisations/streams which might be available in a degree/diploma, eg a Bachelor of Education specialising in Music, Mathematics, etc.
Academic Requirement (Defined by NUSTAR)
A requirement to be satisfied by the student in order to graduate. An academic requirement consists of course lists that must be established before the requirement is developed.
Academic Senate (Defined by Corporate Information)
Principal academic body of the University of Newcastle. It is the primary forum for debate on all academic issues in the University, approves academic policies, and has a major role in academic quality assurance processes through its Committees.
Academic Staff (Defined by Human Resource Services)
Members of staff who contribute to teaching and research and participate in professional activities and academic planning and governance of the institution. The balance of functions vary according to level and position. (See Conditions of Employment for academic salary rates, etc.)
Academic Staff (Defined by UoN Statistics)
A category which is used to identify members of staff whose current duties classification is part of an academic industrial award, i.e. those staff appointed principally to undertake a teaching only function or a research only function or a teaching-and-research function.
Academic Subject Area (Defined by NUSTAR)
Subject Area is used to identify discipline areas within NUSTAR and has both a code (eg ECON) and a title (eg Economics).
Academic Subject Code (Defined by UoN Statistics)
The alphabetic prefix of a Course i.e. the AART in AART1010. Also commonly referred to as Subject.
Academic Term (Defined by NUSTAR)
An administrative time period within which sessions are defined, students are billed, and statistics are accumulated for individual students as well as for the organisation. Note that different careers may have totally different academic term structures Within NUSTAR the following terms have been established: Semester 1, Semester 2, Trimester 1, Trimester 2, Trimester 3 and Summer School.

A chronological record of enrolment and official assessment results in courses and programs.

The number of commencing students in each equity group expressed as a percentage of total commencing domestic students.

Additional SLE (Defined by DEST 2005 Student Help File)
An extra entitlement to ensure that eligible persons have enough Student Learning Entitlement (SLE) to undertake a course of study as a Commonwealth supported student. The amount of additional SLE that a student receives depends on the course they are enrolled in and whether they have used additional SLE in the past.
Administrative Information For Providers (AIP) (Defined by DEST 2005 Student Help File)
A reference manual that helps providers interpret and implement requirements of the Act and associated guidelines.
Advanced Standing (Defined by Corporate Information)
Includes both credit transfer and credit for prior learning. It means credit granted towards a program at the University of Newcastle for relevant approved study, experience or work satisfactorily completed at the University or elsewhere.
Advisement (Defined by NUSTAR)
Advisement tracks the requirements and policies that a student must satisfy in order to graduate. As the student progresses towards graduation, advisement analyses those courses and compares them against the requirements of the program in which the student is enrolled.

People who have studied, graduated, worked or been associated with the University of Newcastle and its antecedent institutions.

The evaluation of a student's overall academic performance in a course by whatever means the Faculty has determined.
Assumed knowledge (Defined by Student Recruitment)
Some programs and courses list certain HSC subjects as assumed knowledge. For example, the Bachelor of Biomedical Science has assumed knowledge of HSC Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. These subjects generally form the basis of a particular program and you will be assumed to have passed them before starting University. Without this basic knowledge, you may struggle to achieve in your program.

Attendance Mode (Defined by UoN Statistics)
A classification of the manner in which a student is undertaking a program. Internal Student: a student who is undertaking coursework or research through regular attendance at the University. External Student: a student who is undertaking coursework or research at a location where physical distance from the University precludes regular attendance. Students studying in this mode will often have their instructional materials delivered to them.
Attendance Type (Defined by UoN Statistics)
A classification of the amount of load undertaken by a student in a program in the reference year: Full-time: A student is classified as being full-time when the aggregated student load across all units of study (including work experience in industry units) in a particular program undertaken by the student in the reference year is 0.75 or more. Part-time: A student is classified as being part-time when the aggregated student load across all units of study (including work experience in industry units) in a particular program undertaken in the reference year is less than 0.75.

Australian Exchange Students (Defined by DEST 2005 Student Help File)
A student who is undertaking a program of studies under the following conditions: the student is enrolled in a course at the Australian home higher education provider; the Australian home higher education provider will count the program of studies as credit towards that course; the host higher education provider is not an Australian higher education provider;the host higher education provider does not charge tuition fees to the student for the program of studies; there is a formal agreement between the two higher education provider for the student exchange. An Australian exchange student may be undertaking additional units of study which are extraneous to the program of studies which is the subject of the formal agreement.

Authority (Defined by InfoSkills)
The knowledge and experience that qualifies a person to write or speak as an expert on a given subject. In the academic community, authority is based on credentials, previously published works on the subject, institutional affiliation, awards, imprint, reviews, patterns of citation, etc.

The amount of SLE that a student is eligible for but has not yet consumed, minus SLE associated with units of study that a person has enrolled in but for which the census date has not yet passed.

The particular achievement - certificate, diploma, degree, graduate certificate, or graduate diploma - conferred upon successful completion of the requirements for that specified program.

A recognised certification of achievement or competence which may be granted to a student after completion of all the requirements of a Higher Education Course or TAFE course.
Award Course (Defined by DEST 2005 Student Help File)
A program of study formally approved/accredited by the Higher Education Provider or any other relevant accreditation authority and which leads to an academic award granted by the Higher Education Provider or which qualifies a student to enter a course at a level higher than a bachelor's degree. It includes courses of an equivalent nature undertaken overseas.
